There might not be any Galaxy S6 Edge variant with a curved screen

We recently published exclusive info on the Galaxy S6, Samsung’s next big flagship smartphone that will launch sometime early next year. We had received inside info that the Galaxy S6 would also have a curved screen variant called the Galaxy S6 Edge, but we’ve now received updated details from one of our insiders that suggests there might not be an Edge variant of the S6 after all. Apparently, there’s still a separate variant of the Galaxy S6 in the works, but at the moment, the prototype device doesn’t have an Edge screen. That leaves us to speculate on what this Galaxy S6 variant will have as a defining feature – maybe an Edge screen will be implemented later on, or it could have some other new feature that puts it in a league of its own. Samsung’s Project Zero initiative to make the Galaxy S6 an amazing device leaves open many possibilities; maybe the non-standard variant will be a device with on-screen buttons or something similar, though at this point it’s too early to say what Samsung has in mind.

Samsung Galaxy Ace explodes next to Ontario University student

Smartphones exploding isn’t exactly a frequent occurrence, but when something like this does happen, it manages to become a hotly debated topic across the internet. However, it seems one case of a Samsung phone exploding might have gone unnoticed since October. A CBC News report has revealed that a Galaxy Ace exploded next to Hope Casserly - an Ontario University student - while she was sleeping, an incident that was only reported on Monday this week. The phone was not charging and was simply resting still on the girl’s bedside; the battery exploded and caused her bed to catch fire, but she thankfully managed to put it out with her pillow.
Samsung has reportedly replaced the device for her and has sent the damaged device back to South Korea for investigation. Casserly is also asking Samsung to pay for damaged bedding and mattress, which together cost over CAD 1,000, and it’s like the Korean manufacturer will oblige with that demand given the severity of the whole incident.

Project Beyond 3D camera captures 360-degree footage for Gear VR

The Samsung Developer Conference is taking place today in San Francisco where quite obviously the announcements being made are geared towards developers. During the keynote address the company unveiled Project Beyond. Its a new and rather unique 3D camera which is capable of recording 360-degree video which can then be used for creating experiences for the Gear VR headset.
Project Beyond consists of 16 camera that have ultra-wide lenses capable of capturing video at one gigapixel per second. There’s a 17th camera on top of the device for capturing the overhead shot.

Developers will soon be able to pick one up. Samsung hopes that more developers will come on board to create experiences for the Gear VR, so that end users have a good collection of content to access when they get their hands on the virtual reality headset.

Samsung Gear S sells 10,000 units in South Korea on first day of launch

Being a smartwatch that doesn’t need a companion smartphone to be able to make calls or let you navigate to your destination, the Samsung Gear S is no doubt the most capable smartwatch out there. Over in South Korea, Samsung’s home country, it looks like consumers have taken a liking to the feature-packed Gear S, as apparently 10,000 units of the smartwatch were sold right on launch day. The Gear S went up for sale in South Korea on November 5 from local carriers SK Telecom and KT, and it’s likely Samsung has been able to sell more than 20,000 units in the last week.
The Gear S features a curved 2-inch Super AMOLED display, a dual-core Exynos processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage, and a 300mAh battery. Running on Tizen, the Gear S comes with inbuilt Wi-Fi and GPS chips, a SIM card slot that supports 3G networks, heart rate and UV sensors, and a barometer and compass. It can be paired with a Samsung smartphone running on Android 4.3 or above, as long as it supports Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy, though as mentioned above, pairing the watch with a phone is optional (though you will need to pair the first time you turn on the Gear S.)

SM-Z130H Tizen phone specs emerge on Samsung’s website

The upcoming low-end Tizen phone from Samsung, which is currently known only by its model number SM-Z130H, has been under development for a few months now, and is expected to launch in the Indian market by the end of this month/in December. We’ve already offered exclusive information on the hardware the Z130H will carry, and now, Samsung’s own website is reiterating some of that information while revealing a few extra details. According to the phone’s user agent profile, it will feature a display resolution of 480×800 pixels (likely on a 4-inch display) and will be powered by a 1.2GHz processor.
On the software front, it seems to be running on Tizen 2.3, something we confirmed in our exclusive two months ago. We also revealed that the phone will have dual SIM slots, support for FM radio, and a 3.2-megapixel camera, making it an extremely low-end device, though none of this is mentioned in the user agent profile as expected. But the phone’s listing on Samsung’s website is a good sign the phone is closer to a launch than ever before, though it’s always possible Samsung will find some reason or the other to delay a release.

Samsung releases first TV commercial for the Gear S

The Gear S, Samsung’s six wearable device for the wrist, has been going up for sale in various markets in recent weeks, and Samsung is naturally looking at ways to make people actually buy its feature-packed smartwatch. To this end, the Korean manufacturer has released the first commercial for the Gear. Unlike the creepy ads Samsung released for the original Galaxy Gear last year, the Gear S commercial doesn’t waste any time and simply lets viewers know what it’s capable of. “It’s a compass.” “It’s an extra pair of hands.” “It’s not a watch.” are basically all you will hear, as the ad goes about showing how the Gear S offers directions, lets you make phone calls and send messages without a phone, and so on.
The Gear S was made available for purchase in South Korea last week, where it sold 10,000 units on the first day of launch, and in the US as well. The selling point of the smartwatch is its curved 2-inch Super AMOLED display, and also its inbuilt SIM card slot and Wi-Fi and GPS chips, which let it work without needing a companion smartphone at all times (a fact the ad reiterates as a guy leaves his phone in his locker and still manages to use his Gear S to send messages while getting a haircut.)

Samsung close to building their second smartphone plant in Vietnam

Samsung already has a smartphone plant in Vietnam and according to a new report from Reuters, the South Korean giant has applied a license to build their second smartphone plant in the country. Samsung Electronics Vietnam, a subsidiary of Samsung, intends to build a $3 billion worth smartphone plant in the Thai Nguyen province, if they get an approval from the country’s Planning and Investment Ministry. To reduce costs and better compete with low-end smartphones from Chinese smartphone vendors like Xiaomi, Samsung has been increasing production in Vietnam. According to Thai Nguyen provincial government, Samsung’s first smartphone manufacturing plant in Vietnam generated around $1.9 billion in export revenues in its first four months of operation. If this plan to build a smartphone manufacturing unit gets approved, Samsung’s total investment in Vietnam would be around $11 billion this year.
Samsung’s reported reduces profits from its smartphone business for Q3 2014. It is trying to solidify its semiconductor business by investing $14.7 billion on a new semiconductor plant in South Korea. It also made a huge processor chip deal for Apple’s upcoming iPhones and iPads, and is expecting improved profits from the deal.

Samsung releases two new humorous video commercials for the Galaxy Note 4

Samsung continues to release video commercials for the Galaxy Note 4 in a hope to make it the best-seller this holiday shopping season. In the previous videos, it focussed on the S Pen features, its 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED screen, and its 16-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation. The two latest video commercials under the ‘Do You Note?’ campaign, which have twist of humour in them, promote the S Pen which can be used for handwriting and drawing as well as its Scrapbook and photo cropping/sharing functionalities. The Galaxy Note 4 was announced during Samsung’s pre-IFA 2014 Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 event and is already available in all the major markets throughout the world. Samsung is hoping to make the Galaxy Note 4 a touch competitor to the first phablet offering from Apple, the iPhone 6 Plus, which comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p display.

Samsung continuously investing into the Gear VR ecosystem

Samsung marked its entry into the world of virtual reality by launching the Gear VR during IFA 2014. Their revenue through mobile business might be depleting, but they are being bullish about the prospects of virtual reality devices. According to a report from Korea Herald, Samsung is trying to create an ecosystem for their virtual reality devices by investing in game companies and developers who have great ideas and are willing to create content. According to their sources, at least one local mobile role-playing game developer has already received funds from Samsung to release a game for the Gear VR. Samsung might also invest in overseas companies to create VR content for their first virtual reality headset. Apparently, there are three more companies who are getting ready to release VR games in the future. Oculus has already confirmed the ‘Gear Quest’ game for the Gear VR, while Samsung has showcased content for the device.
It is also being reported that Facebook is working with Korean game developers to release VR games for the Oculus Rift. Analysts have predicted that the Gear VR could create $7 billion market in the next four years, but everything is not perfect. The Gear VR was reported to have overheating issues, which were reportedly being caused by the Galaxy Note 4. Oculus has already warned its competitors against releasing VR products which are not ready for the primetime yet. According to Oculus CEO, Brendan Iribe, such unfinished products can cause disorientation and motion sickness to the users.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 features ported to the Galaxy Note II through a custom ROM

The Galaxy Note 4 is the latest and greatest device in Samsung’s category-defining phablet lineup, and is naturally a major upgrade over the two-year-old Galaxy Note II, both in terms of hardware and software. Well, those who are still rocking a Note II can’t exactly upgrade their hardware without buying the Note 4, but those who have no qualms installing a custom ROM can now have many of the new features found in Samsung’s fourth-generation Galaxy Note flagship. A developer team on XDA has released a custom ROM that includes quite a few features from the Note 4, including Ultra Power Saving Mode, Smart Select (and the new Air Command interface), the Flipboard homescreen, Scrapbook, and the new interfaces from stock apps like the clock and dialer.
There’s quite a few other things that the ROM comes with, and the exhaustive list can be found at the source link. As always, keep in mind that flashing a custom ROM is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly, and that there might be issues that you won’t find on the device’s stock software. We should also point out that the ROM is based on Android 4.4.2, so you will still be waiting on Samsung to release the Android 4.4.4 update that has been going out to other Samsung devices in the past few weeks.

Samsung seeks court declaration for its right to terminate patent-licensing agreement with Microsoft

Microsoft had announced through a blog post back in August that it was filing a legal complaint against Samsung because the Korean giant had allegedly violated a patent-licensing agreement between the two companies that was signed back in 2011. Microsoft alleges that Samsung not only refused to pay loyalties but also did not pay interest on late payments that are outstanding since September 2013.
While there were reports a few weeks back that both companies had begun talks to amicably settle the dispute, that doesn’t mean that the legal proceedings have come to a standstill.
Yesterday Samsung made a new filing in this case which has been put up at the Southern District of New York. Microsoft recently submitted an amended complaint which wants the court to declare that regardless of the acquisition of Nokia’s devices and services business Samsung does not have the right to unilaterally kill the patent-licensing agreement.
Samsung has filed its counterclaim which seeks a declaration from the court regarding its right to terminate the patent-licensing agreement. An important distinction has to be made here, Samsung isn’t unilaterally killing the agreement, but it would like a declaration that clarifies its right and option to do so.
If that declaration is granted then Samsung would have some leverage in the matter, and perhaps it would be able to use that leverage against Microsoft to renegotiate the terms of this agreement.

[Video] You can use a knife to operate your Samsung Galaxy Note 4

Screen sensitivity is an important aspect of smartphone displays these days, mainly for those who live in cold regions where removing their gloves to use their phone isn’t always an option. Samsung has offered an option to increase the sensitivity of its phone’s displays since last year, and it looks like the Galaxy Note 4 display is so sensitive that it can be used with a knife. That’s right, someone on YouTube actually shot a video showing the Note 4 being operated with a knife. The capacitive buttons work as well, and thanks to the Gorilla Glass protection, the display comes out unscathed at the end of the entire ordeal.
Hit the play button below to watch the Galaxy Note 4 being put under the knife. Literally.

It’s 2014, Samsung. Why does your software still lag, even on a flagship device?

It’s 2014. The market for smartphones has matured to a point where specs do not really matter. Instead, it’s the software on devices that decides what kind of experience users get and just how useful the device is in complementing their lives. Android has reached a point where even $100 devices run fast enough and do most of the things that a flagship device can do, so why is it that the software on Samsung smartphones is still so slow and laggy?
I’m not one to limit myself to devices from a single company. Ever since I lost my Galaxy Note 3 earlier this year, I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride of sorts, going through no less than three flagship smartphones from other companies. I started with the Sony Xperia Z1, followed it up with the HTC One M8, and finally settled on the OnePlus One for a month or so before buying the Galaxy Note 4 as soon as it launched in my country.

 http://goo.gl/v45G0X

Using those devices from Sony, HTC, and OnePlus and then switching to the Galaxy Note 4 was an eye-opening experience. What I noticed on the Note 4 from the moment I started using it was the insane amount of lags, stutters, and waiting times for things to happen. The Galaxy Note 3 was a fast device, but it had a camera and gallery app that were utterly slow. Many have pointed out that the gallery and camera apps on their Samsung devices run absolutely fine, but I’m not sure those who say that have used smartphones from other manufacturers in the last year or so.
On the Note 4, things are worse. While the camera app is a bit faster, the gallery app is still painfully slow at loading images. But that’s not the worst part. The Note 4 even takes a second or two to wake up when I press the home or power button when the screen is off, often making me wonder if I pressed said button properly or not (S Voice is turned off and disabled, so that isn’t the reason for the delay.)
Once past the lockscreen, there are a few stutters and lags in general usage as well. For example, the recent apps menu takes up to two seconds to show up, and scrolling through the apps in the recent apps screen is very jittery. Then there’s the settings menu. Every time you open the settings menu, you can expect to be met with stutter when scrolling through it, though it becomes smooth after a few seconds.
Software optimization was never Samsung’s strong suit, and on the Galaxy Note 4 it’s far worse than what it was on the Galaxy Note 3. Sure, I understand the higher screen resolution puts more load on the processor and GPU, but maybe Samsung should have stayed on Full HD and instead focused on bringing its software up to the mark first? A flagship device, in 2014, should be extremely fast, fluid and lag-free, but it seems Samsung just doesn’t seem to care about how fast its software is, as long as it can cram a lot of features and functionality and parade them as bullet points for their marketing campaign.
In terms of functionality, the Note 4 is a killer device and the best phablet in the market today, but using it as my main device hasn’t given me the flagship feel that I got from even the year-old Xperia Z1, or the HTC One M8, which remained extremely fast and smooth even after six months of use. I have written before that Samsung needs to optimize TouchWiz if it intends to go after the low-end market, but if its flagship devices can’t match what the competition is now offering, I wonder if the budget market will see Samsung as a dominant player ever again.
It’s 2014, Samsung, and maybe its time you stopped running after mind-blowing hardware like a Quad HD display and instead focused on making your software as fast, smooth and jitter-free as it should be in this day and age. Apple does it, Google does it, even a small company like HTC did it (Sense 6 is the fastest manufacturer UI out there), and with the resources at your disposal, maybe you can too.

Samsung’s Tizen-based entry-level smartphone leaked again

The first smartphone based on Tizen platform, the Samsung Z, never saw the light of day but it looks like Samsung is working on a Tizen-based entry-level smartphone with dual-SIM card slot. It might be launched in India as soon as next month. The smartphone with a model number SM-Z130H was spotted through its FCC certification. The documents don’t reveal any information about the specifications of the device apart from that fact that it might feature a 4-inch touchscreen, dual-SIM card slot, Wi-Fi , Bluetooth, microSD card slot, and a primary camera with an LED flash. The device has been leaked a couple of times in the past and it was revealed that it might run Tizen 2.3 and will sport a 3.2-megapixel camera as well as an FM Radio.
